The Puranas are called supplementary Vedic literatures. Because sometimes in the original Vedas the subject matter is too difficult for the common man to understand, the Puranas explain matters simply by the use of stories and historical incidents. Bhagavatam also known as Bhagavatam Purana is one of the greatest Purana and epics and very highly revered by devotees of Lord Vishnu.
